Meet the Playtesters- Behind the Scenes Part 1

Hi Everyone,

As you may know, I finished up the Meet the Playtesters series two weeks ago with our final playtester Jose.  Many of you seemed to enjoy the inside look at our playtesters and that gave me the idea to do a behind the scenes interview with our camera man and editor.  You may not know these guys but you all watch their work! First up is our camera man, Daniel.  He is in charge of shooting all the footage for the shoe and racquet reviews as well as vlogs. Check out his interview below.

Daniel

How long have you been working at Tennis Warehouse?

3 years

What does your job entail?

As Director of Photography for Sports Warehouse Inc., I am responsible for the camera and lighting on all the Warehouses’ productions. This includes hanging with the Tennis Warehouse playtesters and shooting their shoe and racquet reviews on the Tennis Warehouse court. When I’m not working in San Luis Obispo, I travel to sporting events and sports manufacturing facilities to cover new sports gear. I get to meet professional athletes and experience the development of their sports equipment, which is the best part of my job.

What video experience do you have? (education)

BA in Commercial Film and Video from Brooks Institute of Photography

What is your favorite part about working at Tennis Warehouse?

The playtesters are awesome and traveling with them is too much fun.

Who is the playtester that gives you the most trouble and why?

Sean is always throwing off my composition because he is too tall.

Who is the playtester that is the most efficient and why?

On court, Brittany and Chris are pretty efficient. For interviews, I would say Spencer and Carol are the most prepared.

Who is your favorite playtester?

My favorite playtester is whoever happens to be hitting the best that particular day!

What is a typical playtest like for you?

About 15 minutes before the shoot I go down to the court and set up the lights and camera for the interviews. Once the players arrive, then we shoot everyone’s experience of the shoe/racquet being reviewed. Once we get all the dialogue shot, the playtesters warm up for about 15 minutes. During that time, I crawl up into our crow’s nest with the camera and frame up for point play. Everyone will then play points for 10 – 15 minutes each. Once we have all the points I need, I move onto the court and shoot the other angles. After that I pack up the gear and we call it a day unless we have another review scheduled.

What has been your favorite roadtrip with Tennis Warehouse?

Every year, the BNP Paribas Open trip gets better and better. 2012 was no let down thanks to the Blalock’s hospitality and a quick visit from my girlfriend Angeline.

What has been your favorite commercial to shoot and why?

Just recently we were able to get our hands on a Phantom V10 high speed camera. High speed cinematography was one of my main interests in school and being able to use it for work was really fun. Everything looks way cooler in slow motion! (Check out the two commercials we shot with the camera:  TW Commercial BNP 2012 #1 and TW Commercial BNP 2012 #2)

What has been your favorite vlog to shoot?

The vlog where Chris chased Jason on Segways was funny. Also, the vlog where Jason and Spencer were “making it rain” was very enjoyable to work on.

Any comments on bloopers?

Keep the camera rolling at all times! You never know. Well, actually I know something funny will happen with these people.

What is your best memory being a camera man for the TW playtest team?

This would be the same as my favorite road trip. I’d have to say the Indian Wells trips are the highlight of every year.

Do you play any tennis? What is your current racquet and shoe of choice?

The first time I picked up a racquet was a year ago and have been playing once a week for the last few months. I am currently using the Prince EXO3 Black Team racquet and the adidas Barricade 6.0 shoe.

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I started playing tennis in high school.  The only reason I tried out for tennis is because I was short a PE unit to graduate during my sophomore year.  I tried out for every sport and the only sport that took me in was tennis.  Just like any other sport, I get really competitive and I was tired of being the rookie so I decided to work on my tennis.  By the time I became decent, I managed to fall in love with the sport and continued to played throughout college at Allan Hancock Community College.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

Rafa! Just the heart that Rafa puts in the court makes me want to play more tennis.  But overall, just watching professional tennis players and seeing what they do is impressive to me.  I could go watch them play live and I find myself to be more interested in watching them practice than to see their actual match.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

SERVE!  I love the serve because it gets me a lot of easy and free shots.  It is the only shot that I could really take my time on with out feeling pressure from my opponent.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

I started tennis with a inexpensive frame called the Prince TT Thunder.  If I remember correctly it was an oversize frame that was head heavy and a real light static weight.  I ended up throwing that frame away when the strings broke since back then I had no idea you could restring a racquet.  By my junior year of high school, my coach hooked me up with two Head Intelligent Instincts that I used for the whole year.  By my senior year, I needed to get something with more control and upgraded to the Head Prestige Mid and finished high school with that frame.  My first year of college tennis, I played with the Wilson K Six tour 90 (Roger’s Frame).  I figured since the great Roger was using that frame it would benefit me.  I was wrong!  That frame was demanding and I was shanking a lot of balls.  My last year in college I went back to Head and customized two Head Extreme racquets to 12.3 ounce static weight and about a 330 swingweight.  After college, one of my friends and former play-tester Danny Castro got me hooked to the Volkl Power Bridge 10s.  But after a while, I ended up going back to 100 square inch headsize with my current frame the Prince EXO3 Tour 100 18×20.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

I would say Pete Sampras but without his accuracy or power.  I am having a hard time breaking 110 mph on my first serve let alone 135mph.  I like playing aggressive and putting away points early.  Or just like Pete, I let my serve do a lot of my talking.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

Rafa Nadal vs Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon Final where Nadal beat Roger 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(8), 9-7.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

At the Avila Bay Club in the first round of a tournament.  I had to play a close friend of mine, Rob Hansen.  He had a higher ranking than me when we played college together but I wanted to earn his respect since I have never been able to beat him in a match.  The final score was 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.  It was really close match and I remember our match gave the tennis director a hard time because it was so long he got behind schedule.  During the match, I was having a hard time talking to him during change overs.  We were both in the zone and I knew I had an advantage since he had stopped playing for a while and his timing was not there.  But at the end of the day, we still managed to grab a beer and make a memory.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

First day of practice in high school during my senior year I decided to be cool and wear big studs earrings.  During our practice we were practicing closing the net out from a volley position.  One of my team members ended up hitting an overhead at me and knocked out my right earring out.  I guess since it was so bright it gave him a target.  Now I either take them off or wear small ones.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

The worse injury was a left groin injury that I had pulled during practice in college.  The Alan Hancock Community College staff did a great job on helping me heal but I did have to miss a couple of matches and was in about a month and a half of pain.  But other than that, I have had no serious injuries.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

Being able to try new material before it hits the market.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

Troy since we both understand our games. Plus I am trying to fix my weak areas and he does a great job on exposing them for me.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

Mr. Troy Lara and Chris Edwards.  They both like to move me around and for some reason my serve does not affect them at all.

What has been your favorite review and why?

Head Prestige Mid since I really hard a good comparison from the old models.

Apparel of Choice: Cotton

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I started playing back in New Jersey as a kid hitting against a backboard at my swim club. I then joined the 12-year-old club team and started playing some matches.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

Watching any athlete in any sport inspires me. In tennis, going way back, Rod Laver, Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Boris Becker all the way up to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would be on the short list.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

Serve for quick and easy points when effective. I can set up a winner volley or open up the court for a different attack.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

Wood: Spalding Davis Cup &  World Open, Dunlop Fort, Wilson Kramer

Fiberglass: Yamaha YFG-30 (Oreo)

Metal: Yonex Gold OPS

Graphite: Dunlop Black Max, Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 85 and Wilson 6.1 95 all iterations

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

Probably John McEnroe as I enjoy singles and doubles as well as enjoy good hands at the net.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

My favorite matches are Björn Borg vs John McEnroe in the Wimbledon finals in 1980 and 1981, Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick – where Andy won more games in the match but  lost to Federer in 5 (16-14 in the fifth) and of course Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal in 2008 at Wimbledon in a  5-setter in near darkness.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

My first national grass court tourney (Santa Barbara 30s singles). I was playing against a cheater (No. 7 seed). After taking so much of his BS, I got a linesman (Mr. Zinc, director of tennis at the club) who watched my match from that point forward. I was on the first court so plenty of people were gathering. I had won the first set and was struggling to hold at 3-3 in the second, despite more bad calls and gaming (like rewrapping his overgrip at 30-all to delay), I get to 40-30 and the guy rips a winner down the line – it was 12 inches inside the court. I dived for it, landing next to my chair – call it out and sit down. 4-3.  I looked at the umpire – (who was also tired of this guy cheating) confirms the ball landed out.

The dude goes ballistic! He refuses to change sides on the court so I go stand next to him at the baseline to receive his serve. I’m bouncing, stretching to keep warm right next to the guy. … Some hecklers from the stands start shouting at him. He then leaves the court to chase the heckler – never returned. I looked at the director, still sitting on the court… “Game, Set, Match!”

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

It was here at Tennis Warehouse, I was feeding Jason some tennis balls for a video shoot from the net.  Jason was to hit a serve then I would feed him the next balls and move him around the court that way.  His first serve is hit VERY solid and right at ME!  Pegs my inner thigh where it took 100% of the momentum, sticks there on my thigh for an extra moment and drops to my feet – as I drop to the court.  Fortunately – it missed more sensitive areas by about two inches. I had a round purple bruise on my inner thigh for six weeks. Jason still won’t come to the net when we play! (side note: Jason still feels really bad!)

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

First injury was in Junior College in a team challenge match (against JT) where I went for a wide groundstroke and my back muscles seized and I blacked out. Woke up looking at my coach and JT  standing over me as I lay there.

Worst injury bar none was Plantar Fasciitis – limping for months, finally took about 11 months to heal.  Latest is tennis elbow, still recovering – rest, rest, rest…

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

Not only seeing the latest and greatest product but playing with it all.  Also not a bad way to spend time …  playing tennis.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

I enjoy hitting with them all. After so many years now they have all become very good players. Special shout out to Jason, Spencer and Tiffani for most improved.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

None of them!

What has been your favorite review and why?

I always enjoy the heritage racquets, Wilson 6.0 and 6.1, Head Prestige, etc.

Meet the Playtesters- Mike Marquez

Hola!

Our next featured Tennis Warehouse playtester is Mike Marquez. Mike can be seen on several shoe and racquet reviews. He is a Customer Service Supervisor at Tennis Warehouse. Check out his interview below.

Racquet of Choice: Prince Triple Threat Warrior Midplus

String of Choice: So many good ones, can’t decide.

Shoe of Choice: Any of the Air Court Ballistecs from Nike

Apparel of Choice: Anything Nike but lately I’ve been wearing some TW apparel.

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I started playing during the summer of 2007 because of my dad’s roommate back in Los Angeles. He would always try to get me to play, but I was never really interested until one day I decided, why not? Five years later, I love the sport and Tennis Warehouse allows me to keep playing, which is awesome.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

One person who has really inspired me over the years and taught me a lot was my college coach, Dave Dantzer. I was a hothead when I first started playing, and he showed me ways to prevent that. He made me a better person and player as well. He is also a BIG Lakers fan just like me.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

I don’t really have a favorite shot. My favorite thing to do is to get to every ball — even if I know the point will be over with the next shot. I was always taught to never give it up and make the other person hit the extra shot.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

My first racquet was a classic Big Fiver. I don’t really remember the exact model, but the brand was Prince. Second, I had two Head Liquidmetal Radicals that I used for quite sometime. Third, I decided to take three Head Microgel Extremes from a close friend of mine, Jose, which were really good racquets. Once I started working at Tennis Warehouse, I got into the Prince Triple Threat Warrior Midplus. However, now that I playtest I use so many different ones that I barely use mine.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

I honestly like to compare my game style to Gael Monfils. I love his style of play and his ability to get to pretty much any ball, and he has my same mentality about never giving up and making the other player hit the extra shot.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

My favorite match live was last year at the BNP Paribas Open tournament in Indian Wells, California. Djokovic and Federer battled it out and went three sets. Djokovic won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. That was one of the first really close matches I had ever seen and, boy, was it pretty cool. The way they moved and hit the ball was amazing. I was in awe by everything they did. It was definitely my favorite match.

Do you have pre-match meals you like to eat before a tournament?

I usually eat a good breakfast that consists of eggs, toast, bacon and anything else I may be craving. Different but right before I play for some odd reason a Snickers bar always does the trick.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

When I was playing for the junior college I had to play No. 1 singles and doubles, which was tough for me because I played some really good players. I believe it was my second or third match, and we played a scrimmage. It went three sets with a crazy tie-break in the third. Everyone  was watching and somehow I ended up winning in three. I was so happy when all my teammates hugged me as we were chanting loudly. Good times.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

Here at Tennis Warehouse we do weekly lessons every Wednesday nights at the local high school. One Wednesday we were playing a game we like to call RYFO, aka Rip your Face Off. It is similar to the game Around the World, but the winning team gets to serve at the other team who are sitting like ducks on the baseline. I’m known for being Mr. Trash Talker to everyone, and without noticing I walked/ran backward into entire ball hopper full with balls and took it down. I just lay there laughing until I couldn’t breathe along with everyone else.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

I think the best part of being a playtester for me is the environment and people I get to talk to and the ability to hit with all the newest products. You can’t beat the fact also that it’s part of my job to play tennis and review all new products and get paid for it. Life is good.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

By far I would have to say Mark “The Machine” Boone also known as “The Wall.” He gets every ball back, and he doesn’t just get it back, but he places it perfectly in my strike zone so I hit the same ball every time and he gets me to be the most consistent I can be. He’s also a good mentor. I’ve learned many things, and I am grateful for that. Thanks, Stud.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

I would have to say Troy for this one. His wicked lefty spin is crazy at times and he is very competitive. He also gets to every ball and uses the most spin out of everyone I hit with.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

The one and only nickname I have is Monchichi (if you don’t know what it is then look it up). I love my hair short, but for the month of November a bunch of us at Tennis Warehouse did not shave or cut our hair, which was a bad idea because my hair loves to grow out exactly like an afro. So, yeah, check it out and see.

Meet the Playtesters- Siobhan Cavan

Hi Hi!

The next playtester is brand new to Tennis Warehouse Playtester Team, Siobhan Cavan. She previously played for University of Oregon’s tennis team and currently works as an Assistant Web Editor.  She playtests both racquets and shoes. Check out her interview below.

Racquet of Choice: Wilson K Blade Team

String of Choice: Gamma  TNT 2 16

Shoe of Choice: Nike Max Breathe Free II

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

When I was five I would run around and pick up all the balls up for my sister whenever she got to play, so my parents gave me a racquet and enrolled me in some lessons. It must have been love at first sight because I’m still head over heels 17 years later…

Who inspires you to play tennis?

My mum. She always says that when I was a kid she would take me to tennis after an unpleasant day, watch me play for five minutes and see my bad mood melt away. She recognized how it made me feel and from that point did everything within her power to help me get to where I wanted to go.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

Probably down-the-line backhand. I can also call it my nemesis. Any of my old coaches will tell you I go for it WAY too much, but I just can’t help myself. Some may call it a lack of self control. Why grind cross-court when I can hit the most satisfyingly aggressive, unexpected backhand down the line!? The problem is, I do it so often it isn’t really unexpected anymore… It will probably cause my inescapable downfall.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

I began with an old (I think!?) red Wilson Hammer that was a bit of a brick, so I migrated to the Wilson Hyper Hammer 6.3. Somewhere around the age of 13 I turned to the Babolat Pure Drive and I upgraded on that a couple times, but my college coach despised the Pure Drive (and with much protest from me), prompted my move back to Wilson.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

Let’s just say I have my own unique style! But I can confidently say I have the swing (as well as, clearly, the powerhouse result) of Andy Roddick’s serve. I’m not quite as twitchy and tight as him, but my childhood coach fashioned my swing pattern after ol’ Andy and it’s served (get it?!) me well.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

I would have to say Federer vs. Roddick 2009, Wimbledon final. Those who know me know I basically have Alzheimer’s when it comes to remembering the details of my life – so I have no idea where I watched it, or who was there with me, but I do remember feeling so inspired. It was a battle (the longest final in Wimby history) and brilliant, right down to Fed’s reaction when he won.

Do you have any superstitions before playing a match?

I get a little jittery sometimes so it’s more just to kick the nerves (nothing to do with being superstitious, obviously, superstitious people are weak): bag has to be zipped up completely on the side of the court, overgrip has to be feeling perfect or I’ll re-do it, ankle brace not too tight and not too loose, water has to be in a bottle because cups make me nervous (I’m not pedantic I just have a fear of spilling okay?!). Just normal, irrational and particular habits that will increase my chances of winning.  I’ve tried to kick em’ but they haven’t created nicotine strips to help with these kinds of addiction.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

I have to shout out to a lovely friend, and former TW employee, Suzie Matzenauer. I had the privilege of playing doubles with her this summer and we made our way to the final of the tournament. At this point I really must mention an incident that occurred earlier in the year when I was lifting weights at college – I managed to stand up into a bar loaded with weights, at the same time a teammate was squatting it. Concussion ensued, meaning that when I was at net and Suzie accidentally returned a serve right into the back of my head, my brain box was at its full impact capacity for the year. I ended up defaulting out of the final with a bag of ice on my head, trying to figure out whether I was weak or an idiot (still haven’t decided). Guys, it’s a hard knock life.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

Or shall we rephrase, “have I had a period of time without any injuries?” I am one of those greedy people that steal all the bad injury karma so that the rest of you can play without anything worse than a tight muscle.  In a nutshell, a long history of injury finishing up with double ankle surgery and a partially missing vertebrae. Definitely surprised that I haven’t turned into a bitter old injury hag. (NB: if you’ve never been injured I’ll probably lose control in a jealous rage when you least expect it and push you down some stairs).

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

Everything! I am still fresh and yet to discover all that is around me, but I have to especially say the amount I’m learning and getting to play as part of my job is awesome. Oh, I also love the people I work with and the team atmosphere, everyone works hard and plays (tennis) hard. Love it!

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

I’m still new here, so I have yet to pick out my favorite or my arch-enemy. Although, I have been enjoying myself some ‘Battle of the Sexes’ doubles with Brittany against guys around the office who (unwittingly) challenge us. Unwise move, my minions, very unwise. (side note from Brittany:  We are undefeated!)

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

On court, Chris‘ crafty fox drop shots. If he does it again and I don’t see it and start running early (because with Chris, it’ll happen you just don’t know when!), I’ll either punch myself in the face or aim my next serve at him when he’s standing at net. Haven’t decided yet.  Off-court, probably Jay and Spence. These two sit in an area of the office I christened the “Slime Corner” and we like to play pranks on each other. Or rather, Jay pranks me, so I prank Spence.  They’re like Siamese twins so it all evens out.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

Not yet, aside from various misspellings of my name (the bane of my existence). And for the record, it’s spelled: Siobhan, but pronounced: shi-vorn, because I’ll assume it will never stop confusing people! Oh, Jay likes to call me Australian (I’m actually from New Zealand) — not cool, not cool at all. I’m going to have to eradicate that somehow. Jay, watch your back, and your swivel chair..  Some screws might get undone one of these days..

Meet the Playtesters- Spencer Boller

Hi!

Our next featured Tennis Warehouse Playtester is the one and only Spencer Boller. He is an Assistant Web Editor at Tennis Warehouse. Racquet of Choice: Prince EXO3 Tour 100 (16×18)

String of Choice: Weiss Cannon Mosquito Bite

Shoe of Choice: Nike Vapor 8 Tour

Apparel of Choice: Nike

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I started getting interested in tennis about the same time John McEnroe became a force at Wimbledon. You do the math. It was purely a seasonal interest for me as basketball and baseball were the sports I played in school. I loved McEnroe, Edberg and Sampras, and Wimbledon was the tournament I loved watching most. Those three guys are why I have a one-handed backhand. Borg? Connors? Agassi? Poppycock ;)

Who inspires you to play tennis?

Well, Fed for one. He’s got all the shots and executes with such grace and fluidity. Who wouldn’t be inspired by that? Then there’s Radek Stepanek of course. Seriously. Love his game and his confidence. Who else have you seen do “The Worm” on court after a match? I know, I know, he has a two-handed backhand, but I no longer discriminate.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

I can’t say I have one favorite shot, but I do like to drive a backhand cross court from inside the baseline and follow it into net. I’m not picky, though. Any shot that wins me the point is equally my favorite. Backhand up the line. Yes. Forehand angle. Sure. Net cord winner. Uh huh. Shank lob? You bet! Of course the pretty shots are nice, but either way, I won’t complain. I’m sure Brad Gilbert would agree.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

Wilson NTour 2, Wilson KTour, Wilson KBlade Tour, Wilson Kobra Tour, Babolat Pure Storm Ltd and Prince EXO3 Tour 100. I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t recall them all.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I’ve seen my game on video, and the fist of reality hits me square in the jaw. My game ain’t as pretty as what I pictured in my own mind. Thus, I wouldn’t insult anyone by comparing my game to theirs.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

It would have to be Game 6 of the 1980 finals when Magic started at centered for an injured Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The rookie point guard not only played center against the 76’ers, but also ended up playing all five positions in the game, scoring 42 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and dishing 7 assists to clinch the championship for the Lakers. Oh, wait. You meant “tennis.” Well, I don’t have one particular favorite match, but I have my least favorite, yet most memorable match. The 1984 French Open final. Johnny Mac vs. Ivan Lendl. Loved Mac and disliked Lendl very much. Up 2 sets to Love, McEnroe had it cinched. It was a botched sitter volley where it all went sideways. All of a sudden, Lendl’s in the match. Next thing you know, he’s holding the trophy. Don’t think I’ve ever been so upset from watching tennis.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

It would have to be the time I was hitting with Chris. He stretched me wide on a backhand, causing me to hit a short response. Knowing he’d be coming in to hit a cross court winner, I started hustling across the baseline to the deuce side. Only he hit it straight up the middle. The timing of the ball and me running, the ball was coming right into my body, so I slowed as much as I could to hit a forehand in close to my body. Of course I tried to swing up to put some spin on it and to also get it over the net. Well, with the ball so close to my body, that was indeed the wrong type of swing as I didn’t realize that my finish would be with the cracking of my racquet into my face. Stinging, yet funny, I didn’t realize for a couple of seconds that I had split open the ridge above my eye. Seven stitches and a lot of teasing is what I got out of it, and deservedly so.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

I’ve had several nagging things from a blunt force cut to the head, to plantar fasciitis to slight ankle turns to bits of tendinitis here and there. The plantar fasciitis probably affected me the most as it was quite painful and lasted a long time. Ice and stretching, along with proper arch support was key in remedying it. Thank you, Superfeet!

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

When people get to know and trust my opinions on product. Helping someone get equipment that best suits them and makes them happy is what it’s all about. Getting to play every day with the latest equipment doesn’t suck either.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

Edwards. I like the challenge. He’s a much better player and he teaches me a lot (whether he knows it or not). He usually seems to bring out my best tennis, though the scores might not always reflect it ;)

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

Blalock. Our styles don’t match up in my favor at all. Unfortunately, my ball tends to sit up in her strike zone. If you know Brittany’s game, that’s a sure way to watch balls buzz by you for winners. She gets to hear an occasional expletive from me now and again, which she enjoys, of course.

What has been your favorite review and why?

I’d have to say it’s between the Babolat Pure Drive Roddick 2012 and the Wilson ProStaff 6.0 85. The Pure Drive Roddick because it may be the only ace I have recorded on video, and the 6.0 85 because of its heritage. Sampras, Edberg and Federer all played with it. Go ahead and add Boller to that list…lol.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

Spennie.

Meet the Playtesters- Brittany Blalock

Hi!

Next up is one of our favorite  Tennis Warehouse playtesters, me! After playing tennis in college, I started working at Tennis Warehouse as the New Products Coordinator. You can find me in lighter weight racquet reviews and women’s shoe reviews. Check out my interview with myself below.

Racquet of Choice: Yonex VCORE 100 S

String of Choice: undecided

Shoe of Choice: Asics Gel Solution Speed/ New Balance 851

Apparel of Choice: It is hard to choose just one- some of my favorites are Nike, adidas, Lija and Roxy.

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I started hitting a tennis ball attached to a string in my garage at just 2 years old. It might not have been pretty, but it was my start. I then started taking lessons at 8 years old and started playing competitively in tournaments at 10 years old. My whole family plays tennis, from my grandma to my aunt to my mom and dad, so I pretty much grew up in a tennis family.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

Easily my favorite shot to hit is my backhand down the line. When I first started playing tennis I actually struggled hitting backhands. When I was 12, I broke my finger on my left hand and could not hit backhands for a couple months. I then relearned how to hit the backhand.  Today, I love hitting all my backhand shots, but the back down the line is my most valuable and consistent weapon.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

Here is my list in chronological order: Prince Thunderlite OS, Prince Triple Threat Hornet, Babolat Pure Drive Team, Prince Speedport Black, Prince EXO3 Black and finally Yonex V CORE 100 S.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

Growing up I was on the shorter side so I was always watching Amanda Coetzer play. But then I hit high school and grew over 10 inches. My game style started to change from a more consistent defensive game to an aggressive baseline style. Today, I would compare my game to Maria Sharapova’s.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

My favorite match was the men’s final at Wimbledon in 2009 between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. I remember that it was the Fourth of July morning, and the weather was really bad. Some friends and I were gathered around the TV with the fireplace going while we were watching the match. The tennis in the fifth set was absolutely crazy, and I was cheering for Roddick at the top of my lungs. He was so close but then Federer finally took the match.

Do you have any superstitions before playing a match?

My one and only superstition before playing any sort of tennis is I have to wear two different colored socks.  They are the exact same sock but just different colors. I have done this for over five years.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

This is a tough to only pick one match, but I will try. My most memorable match ever was in my senior year of college playing doubles with my friend Suzie. We were playing the No. 1 team in the NCAA from Stanford on their home courts. Before the match, the announcer was highlighting their long list of accomplishments and end with the fact that they had never lost at home. Well, Suzie and I went into the 8-game pro set with nothing to lose. We started playing the best we had ever played and next thing we knew we were up 7-1. The team started to play tougher and brought back the score to 7-4. We played a really tough game, going back and forth. At the last deuce I decided to do a crazy poach for our ad. Suzie finished the pro set with a huge second serve to the girl’s backhand. The match was videotaped so you can see after the last point that both my partner and I were stunned that we won and ended up kind of jumping into each other and giving a hug.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

I was playing a conference match in my freshman year in college, and it was down to me and my partner, Diane, to win the doubles point. We were playing a long point, and it ended with our opponents hitting a lob over my partner’s head. I started sprinting toward the ball and realized while I was going to make it to the ball, I probably wasn’t going to be able to stop my momentum. I had a split second to decide to either hit the ball and run into a small fence or stop and miss the ball and fence. I looked at the fence and saw a mesh panel and thought it wouldn’t hurt too badly. So I went for the ball and went crashing head first into the fence. Well, the mesh part of the fence ended up being metal and I bounced back off the fence. Well, the good thing was we won the point and all my teammates could not stop laughing. I, on the other hand, just laid on the court in shock.  I ended up being just fine after a good chuckle, and we won the match.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

Most of injuries have been pretty minor from a rolled ankle to some minor tears in my back and chest. I did have one injury where I tore all the muscles that connect my ribs to my sternum and dislocated a rib while lifting weights. That was definitely a crazy injury that lasted a couple months. For the most part, as much as I hated to do it, I took time off the injuries and made sure I iced and took ibuprofen.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

Growing up, I had no idea what tennis products were available except for the ones I used. Working at Tennis Warehouse has opened my eyes to everything that is available.  I now have the ability to grab any racquet and go out and play without any adjustment period.  I also was able to figure out the exact specs I like and can use that to my advantage when I play.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

I would have to say Spencer. For some reason, I absolutely love the ball he hits. It just sits perfectly in my strike zone and I am able to attack all day.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

I would have to say Chris. He has the absolute opposite game as me. Playing him takes a lot of patience.  Adjusting to his slice and dropshots definitely took some time to get used to.

What has been your favorite review and why?

My favorite review was the Yonex V CORE 100 S.  I may be biased, but I found my new racquet doing that review. It didn’t hurt that I was playing really well.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

A couple nicknames- Beast, B Squared and Coach. Beast might not be the most flatterning nickname for a female but I will take it. B Squared came from one of my college teammates. And Coach comes from the lucky person whom I give lessons to.

Meet the Playtesters- Karly Hoffman

Hi Hi!

Next up is one of our newest Tennis Warehouse Playtesters, Karly. She previously played for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s club team and currently works as a Customer Service Representative who answers product question emails as well as women’s apparel fit descriptions.  She playtests both racquets and shoes. Check out her interview below.

Racquet of Choice: Wilson nTour Two nCode
String of Choice: Wilson NXT 17
Shoe of Choice: Nike Mirabella III
Apparel of Choice: I love wearing tank tops. Growing up playing in the California sun, I’ve always preferred sleeveless shirts to soak up as many rays as I can (and also to avoid farmer’s tan on my shoulders).

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I’ve been playing tennis since I was 5 years old, though intermittently. I grew up attending summer and after-school tennis camps and was lucky enough to have several coaches who played on the professional tour. When I was 12 I decided to focus on other sports, though eventually picked tennis back up again in high school and played for the varsity team. Later in college I played for Cal Poly’s Club Tennis Team. I’ve always loved the individual aspect and competitiveness of the sport.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

I don’t think I can pinpoint just one person in particular; many of my peers inspire me to play the great sport. From my co-workers, who are so knowledgeable about tennis and make me want to play every day I work there, to my family who have always been big fans. Also watching players at the professional level never fails to make me want to go hit the courts after seeing a match.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

The inside-out forehand. No question about it. I’ve always had more confidence in my forehand than my backhand. I love running around the ball to try to hit the sharp angles.

What racquets have you used (not tested) during your tennis career?

The list fairly is short, but the racquets that I’ve played with are the Wilson Hyper Hammer H5 and the Wilson nTour Two nCode. I started playing with the Wilson nTour Two  nCode and still prefer to play with it today.

If you could compare your game style to a pros (past or present), who would it be and why?

I would probably say Lindsay Davenport because of her full, loopy forehand groundstroke. Though sometimes I wish it was because of her height! My short legs and arms are somewhat of a disadvantage at times.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

One memorable match that comes to mind is the Australian Open 2009 Semifinal with Verdasco and Nadal. The match started late at night and I remember being unsure if I’d be able to stay up that late to watch it live. But as the five-set match went on, it became so exciting that it was hard to fall asleep even after it was over.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

When I was playing on the Cal Poly Tennis Club Team, my doubles partner and I beat USC’s club team. Our team had a pretty big rivalry with their club team and managed to squeak out a win against them. I remember the entire match match was so close and every point being nerve-racking.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

One night at a summer tennis camp I was playing with a friend and during the middle of a baseline rally she just stopped hitting the ball. I asked her why she stopped playing and she pointed toward the service line and said, “You hit a bat.” It took a minute for me to register what she said, but sure enough lying in the middle of the court was a bat. And as if I didn’t already feel bad enough for hitting it, on the court next to us was a group of younger kids who heard what happened and ran over to see the bat. Once they saw it, they then started started yelling, “You killed it! You killed it!” Thankfully it was only stunned and flew away after a few minutes. Afterward the kids at the camp started calling me ‘Bat Woman.’

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

Last spring I sprained my wrist while hitting a forehand groundstroke. I’m still not really sure how it happened or how I hit the ball so that it injured my wrist, but I had to take four months off before I was able to play without any pain. The DFX Gyro Ball really helped to strengthen my wrist.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

The motivation it gives me to become a better player. I’m surrounded by extremely talented tennis players and am so grateful to have the opportunity to try different products.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

I love hitting with anyone who would like to hit with me! I’ll take all the practice I can get.

What has been your favorite review and why?

I’ve only just started doing reviews, however, so far I think my favorite has been the Barricade 7.0 shoes. When I was in high school, I played with the Barricade 4′s and I think it’s neat to be able to see the changes that have been made to the shoe over the different generations.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

“The Most Awesome, Best-Looking Playtester Ever” or “The Chosen One,” just to name a few. Kidding! No, I’m fairly new to the playtesting team and I don’t have any nicknames yet. Though I wouldn’t be opposed to any of the ones listed previously.

Meet the Playtesters- Carol

Hello!

We are back in action, and our next featured Tennis Warehouse Playtester is Carol. She is one of our newest additions and a high level female playtester. She currently playtests both racquets and shoes. Check out her interview below.

Click to view Video Footage of Carol

Racquet of Choice: Wilson BLX Six.One 95 16×18

String of Choice: Pacific Natural Gut 16; Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power Rough 16

Shoe of Choice: New Balance 851 and Nike Lunar Speed 3

Apparel of Choice: I’m a Nike girl!

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I have played tennis my entire life. At 2 weeks old, I was on the court watching my parents play. I played other sports during my youth, but really got into tennis when I went to Wimbledon at the age of 10. I got to see one of the best matches of all time, Patrick Rafter vs. Sergi Bruggera. It was a 5-hour marathon match, and I couldn’t leave my seat. I knew then that I wanted to be a tennis player.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

The match I watched at Wimbledon got me hooked, but my parents are my true inspiration. Tennis is a family sport for us, so we really enjoyed spending time together on the court. Both my parents played professionally, so they really acted as role models and inspirations to me. I still hit with my father as much as possible and much to my hatred to admit, he can still beat me on occasion.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

I have two favorite shots: my forehand down the line and my forehand return of serve. It’s even better when I combine the two.

What racquets have you used (not tested) during your tennis career?

My first racquet was the Wilson ProStaff 6.1 and newer versions. In college I played with the ProKennex SX. I went back to the Wilson BLX Six.One after college and still play with it today.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

Hmmm…Victoria Azarenka?

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

I got to see Andre Agassi’s last professional match at the US Open live. Even though he lost, it was very memorable to me. The crowd applauded him for 30 minutes after the match, which brought him to tears.

Do you have pre-match meals you like to eat before a tournament?

I’m a carbs person. I usually eat a big breakfast 2-3 hours before a match. During a match, I love having a Snickers bar handy.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

My most memorable tennis match was my sophomore year against USC. My Grandpa flew down to watch this match, so it was really a family affair. He hates USC, being an Oregon Duck himself. I beat a Top 30 player in straight sets during this dual match, and I have never seen my Grandpa so proud.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

The funniest thing that has ever happened while playing was getting hit by a ball that was going out during my match point. I didn’t find it funny at the time, but now I can snicker at it.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

Growing up I had no real injuries. I did have an arm injury during my senior year of college that benched me halfway through season. That was really rough on me. I was out for 6 months with surgery.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

I love getting to try out all the new tennis equipment. Tennis has evolved so much during my life, and the technology is hard to keep up with.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

I love hitting with all playtesters. We all have such different styles of play, it’s hard to single out just one, but I do enjoy my weekly hits with Jason Huang.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

Probably Brittany.  We know each other’s games so well due to playing together in college.

What has been your favorite review and why?

I really enjoyed the New Balance 851 shoe review. I had been playing with really heavy shoes prior to this, so it was really a breath of fresh air to play in a shoe that was so light and comfortable.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

I have been called a few different nicknames: Care and C-Roll.

Meet the Playtesters- Mark Boone

Hey, y’all!

Our next featured Tennis Warehouse Playtester is Mark Boone. Mark is a recent addition to the TW playtest team, and you can find him on both shoe and racquet reviews. He is the Quality Control Supervisor here at Tennis Warehouse. Check out his interview below.

Click to View Video of Mark

Racquet of Choice: Dunlop 4D Aerogel 200

String of Choice: Hybrid of the Babolat RPM Blast 16 / Prince Synthetic Gut Multifilament 16

Shoe of Choice: Babolat Propulse II

Apparel of Choice: Each manufacturer comes out with some great apparel options, but I do have mostly shorts from adidas and Sergio Tacchini, and I usually wear cotton blend shirts instead of the polyester variety. Since I have a good case of hair deforestation, I always wear a hat that is made of a poly blend and is washable.

When/Why did you start playing tennis?

I was born into a multi-sport family, and tennis was a primary passion for my dad. Weekends during the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, always involved some mandatory tennis at local courts since I was 5. My brother became a local high school standout, which translated well all way the to the D1 level at University of California, Santa Barbara.

Who inspires you to play tennis?

I am pretty easily inspired. It could be from watching Rafa’s post match interview, after he lost to David Ferrer on clay and made no excuse, or from watching a couple of friends on the indoor court execute a decisive point or game. Without a doubt, though, my Mom, who is almost 80 years young and still plays well, and my dad, who helped support all that tennis requires to improve, are a constant inspiration/reminder that tennis is one of the greatest sports of all time.

What is your favorite shot to hit and why?

Probably the volley because it was my weakest link. The net is now where I am most comfortable.

What racquets have you used  (not tested) during your tennis career?

I love it that it is considered a career. The first racquet I can remember swinging was a wood Garcia and some Jack Kramers. There was the Prince Magnesium that Pat Cash made famous, Prince Original Graphite OS, Becker’s Puma racquets (had to have ‘em), Head Radicals galore, and my two favorites so far would be some of the Prestige frames and the Dunlop 4D 200.

If you could compare your game style to a pro’s (past or present), who would it be and why?

I would say that if Rafa and Thomas Muster were turned into one guy who was a little slower and not as skilled, I could be that guy. I am a lefty, and even at 44, I try to wear the other guy down or at least het him to ask the question: How much suffering can I stomach before I say “uncle”? I try to hit the lefty forehand cross court, steep and deep, even if it is another lefty I am playing, and an interesting scenario usually develops from it.

What has been your favorite match you have ever watched (live or on TV)?

An evening match I saw a few years ago at Indian Wells, between Nalbandian and Nadal, has to be my overall favorite, period. At that point Nalbandian had never lost to Rafa on a hard court, and he came out firing to win the first set easily, got all the way to 5-2 and had 5 match points on Rafa. Then Nadal marched back to win the second set and beat Nalbandian in the third 6-0. The quality of the first two sets was incredibly high, Rafa’s mentality was stronger than his left arm, and the fact that the match lasted well beyond midnight lent itself to a gladiator-like atmosphere.

Do you have any superstitions before playing a match?

I am not superstitious, but I do drink an excessive amount of water before I play, and I won’t drink coffee before a match either. Nothing like a lucky pair of undergarments or the same grip I played with from childhood.

Do you have pre-match meals you like to eat before a tournament?

I guess it depends on what time the match starts, but I try to keep it to a form of a fresh vegetable, combined with a carbohydrate of some sort.  From racing a mountain bike I learned that doing anything out of the ordinary on match day is not a great idea for me.

What has been your most memorable tennis match (win or lose)?

I had a match several years ago with a tough, ranked 5.5 player (he made sure I knew this), where it was very windy, and his wife sat behind me the whole time applauding my faults and losses. She even switched sides on the odd games. It felt like I was playing the guy, his wife and the wind. I won in 3 sets, and it is funny because I have colleagues and friends who have had similar run-ins with him on a tennis court, so that one is fun to remember.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened while you were playing tennis?

It has to be notching a friend with a dagger-like volley from close range or getting notched. We have group tennis lessons once per week at TW, and the antics that result from the group are enough to get other players to stop playing to watch the fun.

Have you had any injuries? For how long?  How did you deal with them?

I do not want to jinx myself, but I have been lucky to not have any major injury. I did find out the hard way that you do not get to utilize the favorable traits of a poly at a high tension, but you do get to deal with a good amount of arm pain.

What is your favorite part of being a TW playtester?

The combination of levity between the whole crew and competitive nervousness between the playtesters is what good memories are made of. Playtesting all the different frames, strings and tensions also helps me pay it forward to players/ customers looking for a certain racquet configuration or shoe, which is another aspect of my job here.

Who is your favorite TW playtester to hit/play with?

It is accurate to say that I love and have benefited greatly from the variety of styles of play that I am afforded to play with here in the review room. However, Granville is the guy I pick for the same reasons as I listed below.

Who is the TW playtester that gives you the most trouble?

None other than Mr. Granville Swope. I cannot seem to get him on the run, but he has turned me into a track star.

What has been your favorite review and why?

It is too early for me to have a favorite since there have only been a few, but when Spencer introduced me as Mark “the Machine” for the New Balance MC 851 shoe review, it caught me off guard and gave me a little ab workout from the chuckles.

Do you have any nicknames from the TW playtest squad?

A lot of my friends refer to me as “Boonimal,” but I admit it is hard not to smile and laugh when I hear something like “the Machine” come from others who are machines themselves.
