Babolat Roland Garros Gear

Ciao!

The competition is heating up in Rome today at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the countdown is on to Roland Garros! I wanted to tell you about all of the Babolat French Open equipment that we have in here at Tennis Warehouse that will get you ready to go for the French.

This year, Babolat decided to give their ever so popular, (and my personal favorite) Pure Drive Racquet the special Roland Garros paint job. I may be biased, as my love for the Pure Drive series is no secret, but I am enjoying this color update to this frame. It isn’t too loud but rather has some accents of the colors of the French flag with Roland Garros written on the throat of this frame. Included in this color update is the Pure Drive Lite and Pure Drive Junior Racquet.

4th Annual T-Dubbies: Year End Tennis Awards

Congratulations! We’ve made it another year. Another year that was filled with the usual: unbelievable matches, shocking upsets and ridiculous shot making. But this year was different, this year had something happen that in the past 2,011 years didn’t happen. Yup, you guessed it, this year we had Gangnam Style. You might hate it, you might love it, but either way, you know you’re singing along when you hear “heeeeeeeeeey, sexy lady.” If you are one of the very few, and I mean, very few, who has no idea what I’m talking about, do yourself a favor and click here. And since we’re on the subject of firsts in 2012, and because this is “technically” a “tennis” blog just because it’s “technically” related to “Tennis Warehouse“: Andy Murray and Victoria Azarenka both won their first Grand Slams. How about that!

Before we get to the 2012 T-Dubby awards, here is a quick recap of this past year:
- Novak Djokovic is human! But still really good. He couldn’t duplicate his unreal 2011 season but 2012 was no slouch.
- Rafa is still really good on clay.
- Rafa’s knees, in general, not as good.
- Roger Federer is still really good despite being 31 (that’s 58 in tennis years)
- When motivated and healthy, Serena is scary good.
- Blue clay is scary bad.
- Redfoo of LMFAO really likes tennis. Or really likes hanging out with tennis players. One of those.

With 2013 right around the corner (or if you’re following the Mayan calendar, maybe not), let’s take a look at this year’s nominees.

Best Match
Nominees:
Australian Open Men’s Finals: Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal
It was the longest match in Australian Open history and at the end, both players could barely stand during the trophy ceremony. I remember watching the 5th set and thinking that these guys were hitting the ball harder in that set than the 1st set. This was a match that ended at 1:27 in the morning, lasted almost 6 hours and featured the score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 to Djokovic. And yet, despite that all that, Novak Djokovic was still able to muster up the energy to rip his shirt off. How?! HOW?! I’m going gluten free.

Olympic Second Round: Milos Raonic vs. Jo Wilfried Tsonga
It was just a 2nd round match that featured the 5th seeded Tsonga and an unseeded Raonic. This was supposed to be a relatively win for Tsonga, who made it to the semi-finals of the last 2 Wimbledons. They exchanged sets and then the 3rd set happened. Let’s see here, the first 2 sets were 6-3, 3-6 for a total of 18 games. The 3rd set had a total of 48 games and ended 25-23 to Tsonga. That was exhausting just typing it out, let alone playing it out.

French Open Quarterfinal: Novak Djokovic vs. Jo Wilfried Tsonga
4 match points. Novak Djokovic battled off 4 match points to beat Jo Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-1. He also had to battle off a crowd that was audibly against him and for the Frenchman Tsonga.

US Open Final. Serena Williams vs Victoria Azarenka
After the 1st set, it looked like it would be another easy win for Serena Williams. But after Azarenka battled back to take the 2nd set, the match went to the decisive 3rd set, a first since 1995. At one point Azarenka even served for the match. But Serena, with the crowd behind her, and Serena being Serena, fought back and eventually won it 7-5.

Winner: Australian Open Finals: Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal

The “Wow These Guys Are Good” Award (Best Point)
Nominees
Rafael Nadal vs Tomas Berdych @ Australian Open

Olivier Rochus vs Fernando Verdasco @ Monte Carlo Rolex Masters

Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic @ ATP World Tour Finals

WTA Blog: 2012 Year End Power Rankings

Serena Williams dominated the WTA Tour in 2012.

With the 2012 WTA campaign coming to an end, I wanted to post my end of the year Power Rankings. Just like in football and basketball, these don’t exactly follow the official rankings, but are reflective of who I feel is playing the best tennis to close the year and head into 2013. Without further ado, I give you…

2012 Year End WTA Power Rankings
Power Ranking. Name (WTA Ranking)

1. Serena Williams (3)
When she’s at her best, there’s no woman in the world that can beat her, and for the last half of the year she’s been on fire! Since her first round loss at the French Open, she’s 32-1, winning Wimbledon, the Olympics, the US Open, and the year end WTA Championships (among other titles). There’s no question she’s the best in the world as the year comes to a close.

Victoria Azarenka finishes 2012 with 69 match wins, the highest total on tour this year.

2. Victoria Azarenka (1)
There’s no debate who the second best player in the world is. Vika has dominated the rest of the tour, with a 69-5 record on the year against players that aren’t named Serena. The feisty 23-year-old from Belarus reached two Grand Slam finals this year and won one of them (Australian). Look for her to build on her best year as a pro in 2013.

3. Maria Sharapova (2)
Maria has quietly put together a very nice year, with a 60-11 record and a French Open title to complete her career Grand Slam. She also reached the finals at 7 other major tournaments this year and beat Vika Azarenka twice, the only player other than Serena to do that this year.

4. Na Li (7)
She didn’t perform well at the majors this year, but Na Li has had a nice second half of the year and given the rest of the Top 10 fits. Since the start of the summer hard court season, she’s 6-2 against the rest of the Top 10 outside of the Top 3, and took the title in Cincinnati.

5. Agnieszka Radwanska (4)
The young Pole had an excellent start of the year, and after all is said and done, is finishing the year with 59 match wins, good for 4th best on tour. She’d be higher on the list if Na Li hadn’t beat her three times since August.

6. Sara Errani (6)
The 5’4″ Italian built on her surprise French Open finals appearance and turned in an even bigger surprise semifinal appearance at the US Open. She also took home 4 singles titles and 8 doubles titles this year, along with $3 million in prize money. Not a bad 2012!

7. Angelique Kerber (5)
She’s one of three players to reach the 60 win mark this year, and the only person to beat Serena in the second half of the year. However, she’s struggled for the most part against the best, with a 3-10 against the rest of the Top 10 since the start of Wimbledon. On the bright side, this is the first year the big hitting lefty will finish inside the Top 30.

8. Nadia Petrova (12)
Ever since losing close to Maria Sharapova at the US Open (6-4 in the third), she’s been on a tear, winning two titles and posting a 12-2 record to finish the year. She’s hot and one to watch for at the beginning of 2013.

Caroline Wozniacki looks to get back into the Top 5 in 2013.

9. Caroline Wozniacki (10)
She might be better known for being the First Lady of the PGA Tour this year rather than her on-court results, but Woz has quietly closed 2012 with a flurry. Since the US Open, she’s won two titles and reached the finals of the third tournament, and is gaining momentum going into 2013.

10. Marion Bartoli (11)
The French veteran has been streaky all year, but she had two of her best tournaments at the US Open and in Beijing to finish the year. She’s been hovering around the top 10 for years, and continues to be a threat if the best aren’t at the top of their games.

Thanks for reading!

Sharapova back in top form

Maria Sharapova in her 2012 Roland Garros Nike outfit, and Head racquet

Maria Sharapova in her 2012 Roland Garros Nike outfit with her Head racquet

Winning all four Grand Slams is not an easy feat, but this week Maria Sharapova became the 10th woman to joined the elite group of women who have achieved this. Hold the applause please! Masha just won Roland Garros in straight sets against Sara Errani and took back her position as world No. 1. After making a comeback after shoulder surgery, she added Paris to her major titles at Wimbledon 2004, the US Open 2006 and the Australian Open four years ago. Her weapon of choice? The Head YOUTEK IG Instinct, a racquet that offers a solid response with plenty of spin and power. Like Masha, you’ll notice fast feel with control from the baseline, along with easy maneuverability at net.

Sharapova said in a press release, “This is such an incredible moment. I’ve worked so hard to get to this stage. There were so many emotions when I won the last point.”

Describing her emotions, Sharapova explained, “This is a magnificent moment of my career. I’m speechless. It’s been such a journey to get to this stage. I have so many people to thank, especially my wonderful team.”

Not only does she play enviable tennis, but she has her look down too. The Nike Feather Light Visor is Nike’s best selling visor and provides everything you need on court. The bill is comfortable and black to reduce glare, as well as there being mesh insets to encourage airflow to keep your head cool. The Dri-FIT head band removes sweat and the quick adjust closure makes its easy to adjust sizing. With a gold Swoosh on the front completes it — making it the perfect visor not only for Masha and but for you!

To match her visor, she has her Nike Women’s Maria Statement Dress. It’s sleek, it’s stylish and it’s perfect to give you that little extra on the court. It’s Dri-FIT so will wick away sweat and I love the paneling design on the bodice.

With all that sliding on the clay, Sharapova needed something to keep her footwork quick and agile. In our review of the Nike Lunar Speed 3, the playtesters found it lightweight, with excellent traction, good support, good durability, exciting cosmetics (I love the Scarlet Fire), and with the fit being a noticeable improvement from the older Lunar Speed models.

Sharapova’s entire look is available online here so check it what it takes to look like a champion. Love how hardwork and determination got Sharapova back to the top, showing  everyone that an injury doesn’t have to define your tennis.

What’s new: Apparel to string (and everything in between)

Fila Men's Summer Center Court Print Crew

Fila Women's Summer Baseline Sleeveless Tank

Wow! It was a holiday weekend, but that didn’t slow the influx of new gear. So without hesitation, let’s dive in and take a quick look at just some of the new items this week.

Fila’s summer fashions are here for men and women. The men’s Summer Center Court Group is a mix of blue, grey and white. The designs are clean, classic Fila. For the women, Fila went with floral for the Summer Baseline Group. The pieces are ultra feminine and classy.

We’ve just introduced Tasc to our apparel selection for both men and women. The fabric is fabulous. It’s an organic cotton-bamboo blend that offers moisture management and sun protection. It also washes well, holding its color and it doesn’t pill. Super comfortable, you’ll not want to take this stuff off. Wash and wear! Check out the casual silhouettes.

LoveAll Women's Love Hurts Tee

Another new line we’re carrying is LoveAll, which makes cute graphic tees for women. These burnout tees are cute with clever tennis graphics on them. The cut and style of these makes them a versatile option that women will feel comfortable wearing on or off the court. All the tees are made in the USA.

If you play tennis outside frequently, the LiveStrong SPF 50+ Sunscreen is something to consider. We often think of sunscreen for the summer, but sun protection is something we should think about year-round. The LiveStrong sunscreen is mineral-based and is free of chemical UV absorbers, PABA, parabens and BPA. Cost: $15.99 for 3 oz.

This next item is ideal for the player who wants to protect their headguard and frame from court scrapes. Peel and stick this to the outside of your frame to help prolong the paint and grommet strips. The Head Protection Tape is not precut and is 1.25 inches wide. For $3.95, you’ll get 16 feet of black head tape.

The French Open is in full swing, and Babolat has a special edition of its popular multifilament XCel string to celebrate. Babolat is offering XCel, an arm-friendly string choice, in black. We just added the 16 gauge reel to the site. With 660 feet of string in the reel, this is perfect for frequent string breakers, and for those who like hybrid string setups. Cost: $259.95. Don’t miss the rest of Babolat’s French Open gear and check out the Roland Garros shop.

Bosworth Wilson Sting Mid II Racquet (5/8)

When we put up new items on the Bosworth page, they tend to go fast. Found on the Vintage Racquet page, Bosworth racquets are always in limited supply. They are classic racquets, often designed for use by pro players, and are no longer in production. New and very limited in stock (only one!) is the Bosworth Wilson Sting Mid II Racquet, available only in the 4 5/8 grip size. This is a graphite racquet that fans of the Pro Staff 85 would find appealing.

Wilson Capri Tote Bag w/Cosmetic Case ($85)

Wilson’s just released a few of new bag collections, Capri, Verona and Sevilla, with a feminine touch. All three bag lines have three silhouettes: Backpack, Sling and Tote. The Sevilla bags are a classy quilted fabric, and the Verona bags are on trend with a metallic leather look. The Capri goes for classic, reminding me of Tiffany blue. The backpack is designed specially for tennis so it easily carries two racquets without their covers. The sling bag looks like a 3-pack but has drop shoulder straps more like a purse. The tote is always a versatile choice that you can use to carry racquets or use as a stylish carry-all. Each of these bags comes with a matching cosmetic case. Bonus!

French fashion, French Open that is

I love this time of year. The French Open is just around the corner, and that signifies to me the kick off to the summer. Shortly after will come Wimbledon, then the U.S. Open Series topped off by all the excitement in New York. Really it’s the only time I bother to turn on my TV.

Not only do we get to see our favorite pros play on three different surfaces in a relatively short period of time, but we also get to see them in new outfits. The majors are where we see the big splashes, and each of the majors possesses its own personality — and set of challenges — when it comes to dressing for the occasion.

The French Open is up first. (The main draw first round starts May 27 so set your VCR if you like to keep it old school, but more than likely set your DVR.) What are the challenges of dressing for Roland Garros? There’s the clay, for one. That terre battue gets on everything, it stains and it’s red. The last thing I want is to have to compete for attention with the color of the court. Then there’s the fact that it’s in Paris, quite possibly the most stylish city in the world. I’d think there’s quite a bit of pressure to step out in style.

Nike just launched its plans for its bevy of tennis stars. Let’s take a gander at what we can expect to see.

Rafael Nadal

Rafa will wear the Finals Crew and the Finals Short.

Rafa has obviously mastered playing on clay, so he has no fear when it comes to Roland Garros. He will face the clay court head on, dominating it by wearing the reddish hue Scarlet Fire on top and a white short. He will finish off the look with a Scarlet Fire bandana and matching Air Court Ballistec 4.3s. Just a quick aside on the actual function (it can’t all be about looking good!) on Rafa’s Finals Clay Crew. The shoulder seam sits farther forward than it does on most tops. Nike put in this feature to make the top more comfortable and to allow it to move more freely — because I’m not sure if you’ve seen Rafa’s forehand? But that guy can create insane racquet head speed and has a follow through that shouldn’t be humanly possible.

Roger Federer

Federer heads to Paris wearing all Anthracite grey.

Some of my favorite looks for Fed have been his night match U.S. Open ensembles. So, I must admit, the monochromatic look works for me. His solid Anthracite look will pop nicely against the red clay. He’ll be wearing the RF Smash Clay Polo with a short similar to the Match Woven Short with Cyber accents. To top it off, he has the a matching bandana and Vapor 9 Tour SLs. That SL stands for synthetic leather. For the clay season, the Vapor 9 has synthetic leather through the vamp which holds up better against the clay compared to mesh. Here’s a fun fact about Fed’s polo: If you’re a big fan, you may have already known about the no-sew seams for zero-abrasion comfort, but did you know that as a Dri-Fit UV piece that its sleeves are slightly longer than non-UV protective Nike tops? Yup. Extra length means extra coverage.’

Maria Sharapova

Masha will look sharp on court in her Statement Set Dress.

If any player knows about Paris Fashion Week, it has to be Masha. (She has her own Cole Haan shoe and handbag line.) She, like Fed, will step out in a darker color. Apparently the notion that every woman needs a little black dress also applies to tennis. The Cargo Khaki bodice of her Statement Set Dress sets off the black paneled skirt portion so nicely. This classy color combo isn’t overshadowed either any crazy designs and instead has subtle design touches such as the zig-zag stitching on the skirt. Sharapova finishes off the look with a signature Featherlight Visor and a pair of Lunar Speed 3s in White/Scarlet Fire.

Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka will be ready to leave opponents in the dust in her Tie Breaker Knit Dress.

You can’t ignore the newest WTA No. 1. She has only two singles losses, can you believe it? How dare she wear shorts at the Australian Open?! I kid, I kid. I loved that look and have a pair of those shorts myself. (Check them out in this season’s colors. So cute!) Vika’s back in a dress for the French, and like Rafa, she has the confidence to wear a color complementary to the red clay. Her Tie Breaker Knit Dress in Fruit Punch is the perfect color, too, to usher in summer, especially with its Orange Chalk accents. Unfortunately, that Nike headtie she’s making her signature look won’t be available to buy in Orange Chalk, but we can substitute a basic white one. She, too, finishes her look with the same Lunar Speed 3 shoes.

Serena Williams

Watch out for Serena in the Statement Rally Dress.

Never to be counted out of the running, Serena Williams always is a threat even when not considered among the top contenders. One of my favorite colors against the clay courts of Roland Garros is blue. Her Statement Rally Dress is a gorgeous mix of minty greens and a bluish green teal. Her Air Max Mirabella 3 shoes are a perfect match colorwise, and are some of the most comfortable tennis shoes out there. (Our testing team loved them, and I do mean love. It scored a 4.5 out of 5 overall. Read the review here.)

So there you have it. Remember to set your VCR, wait DVR and get ready to see some great tennis.

Happy Hitting!

It’s gotta be the………..strings?

If you’ve watched any of the coverage for this year’s French Open, then you probably heard the commentators mention multiple times during the 2-week tournament that Babolat has introduced a new string for its players. ESPN analyst Brad Gilbert couldn’t stop raving about it. This new “magical” string is supposedly helping players like Caroline Wozniacki, Samantha Stosur, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and newly crowned Roland Garros Champions Rafael Nadal and Francesca Schiavone generate more spin on their shots than ever before. Could a string make such a big impact?

In the final between Nadal and Soderling, Johnny McEnroe remarked many times that Nadal’s shots were dipping in just inside the baseline due to this new string, whereas before, it’d be landing a couple inches out. I know what you’re thinking, “ha, like Nadal needs any more help generating spin.” That’s like Snookie from The Jersey Shore needing help with her tanning. But apparently he does. (Snookie on the other hand, does not.)

Babolat RPM Blast

Babolat RPM Blast

So what is this new string that has commentators, coaches and players alike all hyped up? It’s aptly named RPM Blast, an eight-sided co-polyester with a silicone coating. I had a chance to hit with a set of this string before it was launched a few months ago. Yes, it seemed to provide great spin. Yes, it felt like a softer co-polyester string. Yes, I wore Nadal’s entire outfit when I hit with it. Oops. But I didn’t think it was a game changing string that was so dramatically different from strings such as Luxilon ALU Power or Polyfibre TCS. But what do I know? I’m no expert. You know who is? Our lab coat wearing, number crunching mad scientist. AKA, The TW Professor.

I gave our TWP a set of the string and asked him to run it through the gambit of tests. See if there’s any solid evidence to back up Babolat’s claims. His initial findings reveal that RPM Blast does indeed have a lower co-efficient of friction than any other strings he’s tested so far. What does that last sentence mean exactly? Allow me to put on my smart cap. Technically speaking, when it comes to the relationship between string and spin production, friction bad.

Coefficient of Friction Graph

So far, that’s the only test I could get the TWP to complete before he had to get back to mixing elixirs with his pipette, programming schematics and dividing equations by pi. But don’t worry, he will be running many more tests and I will continue to update this blog with them.

It seems as if maybe all this hype is warranted. But there is only one way to find out if it will help out your game, and that’s to try it for yourself. Maybe we’ll see you playing in the 2011 French Open Final. Have any of you out there tried RPM Blast? What do you think?

Jason, TW

Rafa lookin’ good on court to win No. 5

By now, most have us know the result of the men’s French Open final, so I feel safe writing a short blog about Rafa’s on-court look. Nike shared some images with us that I thought would be fun to share. (In case you missed the final, Rafa won in convincing fashion, beating Robin Soderling in straight sets. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that means Rafa didn’t drop one set for the entire two weeks?!!)

Rafa loves bright colors, according to Nike, so the Spanish star chose vibrant blue, green and yellow for his Rush and Crush Clay Crew, which he wore throughout Roland Garros. Nadal is known for his tenacity, and when you move like that you need clothes that can keep up with you. His crew top features flat seams so it won’t chafe the skin. His Rush and Crush Clay Short has a four-way stretch material with mesh on the inner legs, so again he is free to move, stretch and slide.

For a design accent, the Rush and Crush Clay Crew has a soccer-inspired neckline. It is, after all, a World Cup year. Also, did you know that one of Rafa’s uncles played for Spain’s national soccer team? I read on Wikipedia that Rafa supports Real Madrid and RCD Mallorca.

Now on to his shoes. I can’t skip the shoes of a man who can cover the court like Rafa! The cosmetics of the Air CourtBallistec 2.3 are great, but one of the features that stands out to me is the built-up DragOn X on the medial of the shoe. If you’re a fan of Rafa or Nike shoes, be sure to check out our video interview with Nike senior designer Tate Curbis. He shows us one of Rafa’s shoes and explains why this durability feature is so important.

So it’s time to hit the courts. Do any of you wear out your shoes in one match like Rafa?
